Write that speech yourself!
The easy route to writing your speech.
You’ve got a speech to deliver and there’s no way you’re going to hire some overpriced writer to put words into your mouth. If you’re going to have to stand up and say something to a group of people, you may as well write it yourself.
You know it can’t be that hard. You’ve sat through enough speeches to know what makes a good one and, more often than not, a bad one. And some of the real stinkers were probably written by so-called writers.
So where do you begin?
Here. I’m going to give you some pointers to help you write a speech that lets you concentrate on delivering it, not worrying whether it will be successful or not. I can't help you with your delivery technique - not in this article, anyway - but you’ll be able to say what you want and get your message across in your own words. What could be better than that? And even if it’s not the best speech your audience has ever heard, at least they won’t be showing you their tonsils or drowning you out with snoring.
What's it all about?
First things first. What do you want your speech to achieve? This is not about subject matter; this is about how the audience feels at the end. (We’re assuming ‘relieved’ is not an option!) There are four main reasons to make a speech:
- You want to educate your audience.
- You want to entertain your audience.
- You want to motivate your audience.
- You want to sell something to your audience. (And remember, that 'something' may be you!)
It’s more important for you to know the purpose of the speech than it is for the audience. They’re passive in this process: all the hard work is yours.
Deciding the purpose of your speech should also suggest its main theme. The main theme is like the backbone of your speech and anything you say should have some relationship to the theme. Knowing your theme also allows you to raid that dictionary of quotations in your reference shelf for suitable reinforcements.
